Hanmer, Shropshire
Hanmer is a pretty little village in North East Wales, located at northern end of
Hanmer Mere and part of the 'Shropshire Lake District'. The name Hanmer is thought
to have either originally been "Handmere" or "Hagenamere" and was derived from 'The
Hanmer Family'. In Character Hanmer appears more English than Welsh and is in the
borough of Wrexham. Hanmer has a great community spirit and friendly village characters
and you will find quaint thatched cottages, the beautiful Hanmer Mere (glacial lake)
owned by the Hanmer family, a 'family owned' butcher, Post Office, village stores,
village school and St Chad's Church.
The Hanmer Arms is situated in the centre of the village and lies in the shadows
of the Saint Chads Church. Originally dating back to the Tudor times, the church,
carved from stone, sits majestically above the mere and is a much sought after romantic
wedding venue.
