History
The Hanmer Arms, previously called 'The Blue Lion' was originally built in the 16th
century. However, in 1820 a fire broke out at the rear of three houses opposite
- the following account records...
"The heat was so intense that the roof of the lion' which was thatched, was several
times on fire, but a copious supply of water thrown on, as well as wet blankets
extinguished it".
In 1821 'The Lion' public house was taken down by Sir John Hanmer Bart, and a good
commodious house of brick and slate erected on the same site, and then given the
name of The Hanmer Arms, which was a farm and ale house.
The Hanmer Arms has been owned by many people over the years, the current proprietor,
Chris, hopes to continue the tradition of welcoming everyone from the
local community and beyond to enjoy the food, beverage and accommodation provided
at The Hanmer Arms.
